We’re proud to announce that Ross Neely, Community Representative of the Minnesota GLBTA Campus Alliance and a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, has won the 2008 Josie R. Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice Award.
The Award is given to those who, through their principles and practices, exemplify a passionate commitment to human rights and social justice to create respectful and inclusive living, learning, and working environments.
Ross’s contributions to GLBTA activism and campus communities have been profound and widely felt, as has his overarching commitment to social, economic, and racial justice, and his willingness to ask difficult questions and move through them toward a more inclusive, accepting, and positive future for all people.
The monies Ross receives from this award will be donated evenly among the following organizations:
-
GLBT Host Home Program of Avenues for Homeless Youth, which provides homeless GLBT youth with safe homes.
-
ADAPT Twin Cities, a grassroots disability activism organization.
-
Trans Youth Support Network, which promotes racial, social, and economic equality for trans youth.
-
Aurora Center for Advocacy and Education, which provides services to survivors of sexual violence and education to the community.
-
And a new Twin Cities GLBT People of Color organization.
As an organizer and activist who is open, hopeful, and increasingly aware of his own privileges and assumptions, Ross is a true ally, and we thank him and congratulate him on this award.
